“I definitely support the freedom of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Iran,” Sarah Shourd, one of three Americans who was arrested in Iran in July 2009 told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran in an exclusive interview right after the trio’s press conference this Sunday.
Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer were released from Evin prison in Tehran last week. Upon their arrival in New York they criticized Iran’s judicial process, the condition in Evin prison, and the mistreatment of other prisoners, whose screams they could hear from their cells.
“I can’t speak definitively about the other prisoners at Evin because I wasn’t allowed to mix with them,” responded Shourd when asked whether she had any interaction with other prisoners while she was in Evin prison adding that, “but I’ve since done my own research and looked into a lot of the cases and I see many egregious human rights abuses and in many ways it made me feel less alone. It made me feel that, in some way, Shane and Josh and I, not by choice or by design, but by fate were brought into a much larger struggle for human rights in Iran. And it’s something that we are very very happy to be able to openly support, now that all three of us are free.”
When asked whether they were given special treatment because of their American nationality, American, she told the Campaign that they were the lucky ones. “I think there are people that are treated worse and there are people that have been treated better- that have been given access to lawyers, and some form of due process far sooner than Shane and Josh were.”
“So, I don’t believe we were given special treatment though I do consider us among the lucky ones now that we are truly free,” added Shourd.
The trio refused allegations made by the Iranian authorities of being involved in any espionage activity, saying that they were innocent from the beginning and that the Iranian judiciary or intelligence never provided any proof for their accusations.
“What Shane and Josh and I experienced with the Judiciary in Iran was a complete parody of justice,” Shourd told the Campaign. “We were never allowed to meet privately with our lawyer. We were told again and again that we would go to court and it never came to pass, until 2 years after our detention. No evidence was ever presented against Shane and Josh and I because there is no evidence and we are completely innocent.”
And what is Sarah Shourd going to do now? “Well, I definitely support the freedom of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Iran.”

وقتی از سارا شورد سوال شد که آیا با هیچ زندانی دیگری در طول حبس خویش در زندان اوین در تماس بوده است وی گفت: “من نمیتوانم بطور قطعی راجع به سایر زندانیان اوین سخن بگویم، چون به من اجازۀ ارتباط برقرار کردن با آنها را نمیدادند.” وی افزود: “اما از زمانی که آزاد شده ام، تحقیقاتی رادر این زمینه به عمل آورده ام و شاهد نقض فاحش حقوق بشر بوده ام. این کار باعث شده احساس تنهایی کمتری بکنم. باعث شد که حس کنم شین و جاش و من نه از طریق انتخاب، بلکه از طریق سرنوشت به درون یک تلاش بزرگتر برای دفاع از حقوق بشر در ایران وارد شده ایم. و این چیزی است که ما خیلی خیلی خوشحال هستیم که حال که هر سه نفرمان آزاد هستیم، از آن به صورت آشکارحمایت کنیم
وقتی از سارا شورد سئوال شد که آیا به دلیل تابعیت آمریکایی اش با آنها متفاوت رفتار شده بود وی به کمپین گفت که وی خوش شانس بوده است: “من فکر می کنم رفتاری که با شین و جاش شد بیشتر شبیه رفتاری بود که با زندانیان ایرانی در زندان می شود.” خانم شورد افزود: ” من فکر می کنم رفتاری که با بعضی از زندانیان میشود بدتر است و با بعضی ها هم رفتار بهتری میشود، مانند کسانی که قادر به دسترسی به وکلای خویش بوده اند و یا کسانی که زودتر به روند قضایی دست یافته اند. بنا بر این من اعتقاد ندارم که با ما رفتار ویژه ای شد، اگرچه که تصور می کنم ما خوشبخت بودیم چون اکنون ما واقعا آزاد هستیم
این سه آمریکایی ادعای مقامات ایرانی مبنی بر جاسوس بودن خویش را رد می کنند و می گویند که بیگناه بودند و قوۀ قضاییۀ و یا وزارت اطلاعات ایران هرگز هیچگونه مدرکی دال بر جاسوسی آنان ارائه نکرده است
شورد به کمپین گفت: “آنچه که شین و جاش و من با قوۀ قضاییۀ ایران تجربه کردیم یک شوخی کامل با عدالت بود.” وی افزود: “به ما هرگز اجازۀ ملاقات خصوصی با وکیلمان داده نشد. به ما و مخصوصا به شین و جاش چندیدن بار گفته شد که به دادگاه میرویم و تا دو سال پس از دستگیری هرگز این اتفاق نیفتاد. هیچگونه سندی هرگز بر علیه ما ارائه نشد ، چون هیچ مدرکی وجود نداشت و ما کاملا بیگناه هستیم
