Thursday July 21st, 2011 - In a letter written to his wife Mahdiyeh Mohammadi on the occasion of her birthday, incarcerated journalist and Secretary General of Office for Strengthening Unity [Advar Tahkim Vahdat], Ahmad Zeidabadi, describes his devoted wife as someone who is extremely strong, wise, considerate and patient.
Zeidabadi who has been behind bars for 767 days and has never been granted furlough from prison during this time, wrote the following message to his wife Mahdiyeh Mohammadi: “God willing, we will some day have a fresh new start and once again experience those pleasant memories. It is not too late and until then our only recourse is to remain patient and tolerant.”
Zeidabadi was sentenced to six years imprisonment and five years exile in Gonabad after the rigged presidential elections in 2009. In May 2011 an independent international jury of 12 media professionals selected Iranian journalist Ahmad Zeidabadi, who is currently serving his six year sentence to the laureate of this year’s UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

My dearest Mahdiyeh,
I held a small ceremony in my cell on the occasion of your birthday. It was the only thing I could do. When I think about our destiny I realize that twenty years ago, we not only selected each other [as a couple] but also discovered each other. At the time very few people thought that Mr Mohammad Bozorgvar’s mischievous and stubborn little girl with dark features, would transform into a model mother and wife; a woman of strong character, wise, considerate, patient and devoted, traversing life’s hardships and sufferings with such grace. I have experience true happiness with you and our children by my side and I have learned so much from your conduct. God willing, we will some day have a fresh new start and once again experience those pleasant memories. It is not too late and until then our only recourse is to remain patient and tolerant.
