The world’s largest container firm suspended operations at several Iranian ports on Thursday, potentially disrupting critical food shipments as it complies with tightening U.S. sanctions.
Maersk line, a unit of A.P. Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO), manages several refrigerated ships and container vessels that transport food to the country, including wheat, rice and bananas from Asia.
Shipments could be delayed for weeks as Maersk adjusts its operations in the Middle East, analysts said.
“We are not sure how they are going to sort this out as it could disrupt food supply to Iran, especially ahead of the Ramadan festival,” said Ker Chung Yang, an agricultural commoditiesanalyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore.
The United States last week blacklisted Tidewater Middle East Co. and prohibited U.S. entities from any transactions with the major Iranian port operator, which manages over 90 percent of the country’s container operations.
“Maersk Line is committed to complying with all relevant foreign trade controls and sanctions programmes,” said Morten Engelstoft, chief operating officer for Maersk Line in a statement on Thursday.
“In this connection, Maersk Line has decided to cease acceptance of, business to and from the Iranian ports of Bandar Abbas, Bandar Khomeini and Asaluyeh.”
Engelstoft declined to specify how much cargo would be affected by the closure of its operations, but did say it would not impact the company’s quarterly earnings in “any material way.”
SHIPPING ALTERNATIVES
Maersk operates in other Iranian ports and could also divert shipments to Dubai, partnering with other companies that are not bound by U.S. sanctions aimed at curtailing Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme.
“This does leave a challenge for foodstuffs when we can’t transport to those ports. That challenge will need to be resolved,” Engelstoft said.
“We might be able to do that through the port in Bushehr, which is not covered by sanctions, but the overall challenge of foodstuffs to Iran will probably need to be solved politically.”
The sanctions are expected to force other shippers with business in the United States to avoid Bandar Abbas and other port facilities managed by Tidewater Middle East, which Washington suspects is run by the Revolutionary Guards.
Tidewater-managed ports have been used to export arms or handle related material in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions, the U.S. Treasury said last week. International sanctions are aimed at curtailing Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme.
Maersk’s Engelstoft said a number of other shipping lines have also suspended their operations at Tidewater’s ports, but declined to name them.
Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas Container Line last week suspended its direct voyages to Bandar Abbas, saying it was due to commercial reasons and not because of U.S. sanctions.
South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping and privately owned Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s second largest container firm, said their Iranian operations were not immediately affected by the sanctions.
Bandar Abbas, the world’s 49th largest container port in 2009, handled around 2.6 million twenty-foot equivalent container units last year, according to Tidewater’s website.

گزارش خبرگزاری رویترز حاکی است، به دنبال قرار گرفتن نام شرکت حمل و نقل دریایی « تایدواتر میدل ایست» در فهرست مجازات های دولت آمریکا، شرکت «مرسک لاین» که بزرگترین شرکت حمل و نقل دریایی است، عملیات خود در بنادر ایران را متوقف کرده است
مورتن انگلستافت، مدیر عملیاتی مرسک لاین در بیانیه ای اعلام کرده است: «مرسک لاین متعهد است که با تمام کنترل های مربوط به تجارت خارجی و تحریم ها همراهی کند
وی افزوده است: «در همین ارتباط، مرسک لاین تصمیم گرفته است تا امور تجاری از مبدا و به مقصد بندرعباس، بندر خمینی و عسلویه را متوقف کند
یکی از نکاتی که موجب نگرانی ما شده این است که حجم زیادی از محموله های مواد غذایی را به ایران حمل می کنیم. با توجه به اینکه هر جامعه ای به تامین مواد غذایی خود نیازمند است ما باید در نظر بگیریم که ایران حتی پس از قطع بخشی از نقل و انتقال ها توسط شرکت ما بتواند نیازهای خود را تامین کند

وزارت خارجه روسیه روز جمعه اعلام کرد که تحریم های جدید آمریکا علیه دو بخش مهم از شبکه حمل و نقل ایران ممکن است فعالیت شرکت های روسی را تحت تاثیر قرار داده و سئوالات مهمی را مطرح کرده است
رییس شرکت حمل و نقل دریایی «مرسک لاین» در ادامه سخنان خود در کنفرانس خبری سنگاپور گفت:« ما به تحریم های وضع شده از سوی اتحادیه اروپا و دولت آمریکا علیه ایران توجه ویژه ای داریم و سعی می کنیم تا جاییکه امکان دارد آنها را رعایت کنیم. اما اجرای این مقررات چندان ساده نیست چون برخی از آنها قابل تفسیر هستند
به عنوان مثال مشخص نیست که آیا شرکت « مرسک لاین » در مورد بنادر ایرانی تحت مدیریت شرکت «تاید واتر » می تواند به جای کشتی های اروپایی استفاده کند یا نه چون اتحادیه اروپا هنوز شرکت « تاید واتر» را تحریم نکرده است
در یک رویداد جداگانه یک شرکت کشتیرانی دیگر به نام « اورینت اورسی » ( Orient Oversea ) که دفتر مرکزی آن در هنگ کنگ است از هفته پیش حرکت مستقیم کشتی های خود به بندرعباس را متوقف کرده است. یک سخنگوی این شرکت گفت که این تصمیم به خاطر مسائل اقتصادی اتخاذ شده و به تحریم های آمریکا ارتباطی ندارد
تاریخچه و عملکرد تایدواتر خاورمیانه
شرکت تایدواتر خاورمیانه که سهام آن در بورس تهران خرید و فروش می شود، به گفته مدیرعامل آن، در سال ۱۳۸۹ بیش از ۳۵ میلیون تن عملیات تخلیه و بارگیری کالاهای غیر نفتی را در تمامی بنادر کشور انجام داده که بیش از ۳۶ درصد از فعالیت های بندری ایران بوده است
بهزاد اتابکی روز ۲۱ خرداد در مجمع عمومی سالانه این شرکت همچنین گفته است: «شرکت تایدواتر در سال گذشته سهم ۸۹ درصدی از عملیات کانتینری در کل بنادر ایران را در اختیار داشته است
این شرکت در اردیبهشت ماه سال ۱۳۴۷ و با نام «داریوش» تاسیس شد و پس از چند ماه با مشارکت شرکت تایدواتر آمریکا به صورت ۵۱-۴۹، شرکت سهامی عام «تایدواتر خاورمیانه» را تشکیل دادند
تایدواتر خاورمیانه پس از انقلاب هر چند سال یک بار بین نهادهای جمهوری اسلامی از جمله بنیاد مستضعفان، دادستانی انقلاب خارک، شرکت ملی نفت و بنیاد شهید دست به دست شده است
پس از حل و فصل مسائل حقوقی با تایدواتر آمریکا، شرکت یاد شده به سازمان بنادر و دریانوردی واگذار شد و در سال ۱۳۸۷ نیمی از سهام آن در بورس عرضه شد که از سوی چند شرکت از جمله «مهر اقتصاد ایرانیان» وابسته به سپاه پاسداران خریداری شد
