Iranian security forces have shut down a science and research centre operated by the Bahai’i Institute of Higher Education (BIHE) at Iran’s Open University and arrested a number of its staff and faculty members.
The Human Rights Reporters Committee reports that Iranian security forces searched the homes of several BIHE acadmic staff and arrested at least nine people connected to the distant learning university.
Confirmed arrests include: Shaheen Negari, Ramin Zibai, Kamran Mortezai, Favad Moghaddam, Vahid Mokhtari, Mahmood Badavam, Afrooz Farmanbordari and Soheil Ghanbari.
BIHE site reports that “buildings used as laboratories and for academic purposes in Tehran have also been closed.”
The officers have also confiscated dozens of computers, books and personal belongings.
The BIHE was founded by Iranian Baha’is in 1987 and now offers online access to higher education for Bah’is who are denied university access on account of their faith.
Last March a number of Iranian Baha’is were arrested in Kerman and Tehran, accused of “promoting and spreading their programs under the guise of cultural and educational programs in a number of childcare facilities.”
Although Baha’ism was founded in Iran, where there are still more than 300,000 followers, Iran does not recognize Baha’ism as a legitimate religion. Baha’is face extensive discrimination in the Islamic Republic.

به گزارش کمیته گزارشگران حقوق بشر، امروز، اول خرداد ماه، نیروهای امنیتی، با تفتیش منازل شمار زیادی از دستاندرکاران علمی دانشگاه علمی آزاد (BIHE) بهائیان در شهرهای مختلف ایران، دهها نفر از آنها را دستگیر کردند
جامعه بینالمللی بهائیان تعداد بازداشتشدگان در شهرهای تهران، کرج، اصفهان و شیراز را دست کم ۳۰ نفر اعلام کرده است
شاهین نگاری، رامین زیبایی، کامران مرتضایی، فواد مقدم، وحید مختاری، محمود بادوام، افروز فرمانبرداری و سهیل قنبری از جمله افرادی هستند که تا کنون بازداشت آنها تایید شده است. گفته میشود که این افراد به بند ۲۰۹ زندان اوین منتقل شدهاند
در جریان این رخداد کتابها، رایانهها و وسائل شخصی بسیاری از این افراد نیز از سوی ماموران امنیتی توقیف شده است
دانشگاه علمی آزاد (BIHE) بهاییان سال ۱۳۶۶ از سوی جامعه بهائیان ایران تشکیل شد و افراد محروم از تحصیل به صورت آن لاین در آن آموزش میدیدند. بسیاری از شهروندان بهائی، به دلیل عقاید مذهبیشان از حق ادامه تحصیل در دانشگاههای ایران محروم هستند
نیروهای امنیتی، با تفتیش منازل شمار زیادی از دستاندرکاران علمی دانشگاه آنلاین بهائیان در شهرهای مختلف ایران، دست کم ۳۰ نفر از آنها را دستگیر کردند
مهر ماه سال ۱۳۷۷ نیز ماموران امنیتی با حمله به منزل افرادی که برخی کلاسهای دانشگاه بهائیان در آنجا برگزار میشد، تعدادی از دانشجویان و اساتید این دانشگاه را بازداشت کردند
اسفند ماه سال گذشته نیز شماری از شهروندان بهائی در بم، کرمان و تهران به دلیل «ترویج وگسترش برنامههای خود در پوشش کارهای آموزشی فرهنگی در تعدادی از مهد کودکها» بازداشت شدند
با وجود زندگی ۳۰۰ هزار بهایی در ایران، حکومت ایران آیین بهائیت را به رسمیت نمیشناسد. پیروان این دین در طول سالهای گذشته با مشکلات بسیاری در ایران مواجه بودهاند
پس از وقایع دهمین انتخابات ریاست جمهوری ایران در سال گذشته نیز شمار زیادی از شهروندان بهائی از سوی نیروهای امنیتی بازداشت شدند
هفت رهبر بهائی در ایران از دو سال پیش در زندان هستند و به حبسهای طولانی مدت محکوم شدهاند
