U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the United States has received tips that ex-FBI agent Robert Levinson, reported missing in Iran nearly four years ago, is alive in captivity in southwest Asia.
Clinton said in a statement that the U.S. has “received recent indications that Bob is being held somewhere in southwest Asia.”
She urged the Iranian “to undertake humanitarian efforts to safely return and reunite Bob with his family.”
Levinson’s wife appealed to Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad for her husband’s release nearly a year ago.
An Iranian lawyer for the family said in an April 2009 interview that he thought Levinson was being held in Iran.

وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا روز پنجشنبه گفت که اخیراً به اطلاعاتی دست یافته که نشان میدهد رابرت لِوینسون، مأمور پیشین افبیآی که در سفری به ایران ناپدید شده زنده است و «جایی در جنوب غرب آسیا» نگهداری میشود. وی همچنین از ایران خواست تا برای آزادی او به مسئولان آمریکایی کمک کند
آقای لوینسون نزدیک به چهار سال پیش، در فروردین ماه سال ۸۶، زمانی که در قالب سفری کاری به ایران رفته بود، در جزیره کیش ناپدید شد و تاکنون اطلاعاتی در مورد سرنوشت وی در دست نبود
هیلاری کلینتون، وزیر خارجه آمریکا روز پنجشنبه با صدور بیانیهای از پیدا شدن نشانههای جدیدی از زنده بودن رابرت لوینسون خبر داد و اظهار داشت: از آنجا که دولت ایران پیش از این برای کمک در این مورد اعلام آمادگی کردهاست ما احتراماً از دولت ایران میخواهیم تا با کوششهایی انساندوستانه موجبات بازگشت سالم رابرت به آغوش خانوادهاش را فراهم کند
وی افزود: ما از تلاشهای دولت ایران در این زمینه قدردان خواهیم بود
در این بیانیه کوتاه جزئیات بیشتری از محل نگهداری رابرت لوینسون در جنوب غرب آسیا که شامل منطقه ایران و شماری از کشورهای عربی میشود ذکر نشده و دلیل درخواست کمک از ایران نیز در آن قید نشدهاست
ایالات متحده تا کنون چندین بار از ایران خواستهاست که موضوع ناپدید شدن این شهروند آمریکایی را بررسی کرده و نتیجه تحقیقات خود را در اختیار آمریکا قرار دهد
بر اساس گزارشها در دسامبر سال ۲۰۰۷ میلادی، زمانی که کریستین لوینسون، همسر آقای لوینسون، برای دیدار با مقامهای رسمی دولت ایران به تهران سفر کرده بود، از آنان خواسته بود که برای یافتن همسرش کمک کنند
در آن هنگام مقامهای ایرانی به خانم لوینسون وعده همکاری و انجام تحقیقات گسترده دادهاند. موضوع دستگیری رابرت لوینسون پیش از آن هم توسط غلامحسین محسنی اژهای وزیر وقت اطلاعات جمهوری اسلامی رد شده بود
موضوع احتمال دستگیری رابرت لوینسون توسط سپاه پاسداران، که در یکی از اسناد دیپلماتیک در ویکیلیکس و به نقل از یک زندانی سیاسی منتشر شدهاست، ماه گذشته از سوی سپاه پاسدارانتکذیب و رد شد
