Head of Iranian security forces, Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam announced that they will take a poll on the enforcement of hijab (Muslim dress code) in every province.
ISNA reports that Brigadier General Ahamdi Moghaddam has announced that the directive to enforce hijab (Muslim dress code) more restrictively is a provincial responsibility and must be based on popular surveys.
He added that enforcement of this directive is not the priority of the security forces and the provinces may also decide that it is not their priority either.
The recent wave of conservative backlash against laxer forms of wearing the veil was surprisingly condemned by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who two weeks ago announced that he does not support harsh confrontation of “bad veiling” offences by the security forces.
Islamic Republic hardliners who are customarily supportive of Ahmadinejad, criticized him for his statements on hijab and Ahmad Jannati announced that “no one should restrict the security forces in their fight against bad veiling.”
Tehran Governor, Morteza Tamaddon later said that the government does not intend to “detain” people for veiling violations but rather address the issue through cultural promotion and education.

خبرگزاری دانشجویان ایران، ایسنا امروز گزارش داده که سرتیپ اسماعیل احمدیمقدم گفته است که اجرای طرح عفاف و حجاب در هر استان بر عهده «مسوولان استان» و بر پایه «نظرسنجی» از مردم است
احمدی مقدم در عین حال اعلام کرده که اجرای این طرح از «اولویتهای» نیروی انتظامی نیست و ممکن است طرح حجاب و عفاف در بیشتر استانها در اولویت قرار نگیرد
محمود احمدینژاد، رئیس دولت دهم در گفتوگوی زنده تلویزیونی در ۲۳ خرداد، شیوه برخورد نیروی انتظامی با «بدحجابی» را نادرست دانست و گفت که این برخوردها را قبول ندارد و تا جایی که بتواند با این موضوع برخورد خواهد کرد
این اظهارات رئیس جمهوری ایران، سبب واکنش انتقادآمیز اصولگرایان شد. احمدجنتی روز جمعه ٢٨ خرداد در نماز جمعه تهران در اظهاراتش گفت که سخنان احمدی نژاد درباره برخورد با بدحجابان باعث ایجاد «زحمت» شده است
دبیر شورای نگهبان افزود که «کسی حق ندارد دست نیروی انتظامی را در مبارزه با بدحجابی ببندد
انتقادها علیه محمود احمدی نژاد در حالی مطرح میشود که روز پنجشنبه ٢٧ خرداد، مرتضی تمدن، استاندار تهران اظهارات احمدی نژاد را ملاک اجرای طرح حجاب و عفاف دانسته و گفته که دولت میخواهد در این مورد در قالب فرهنگسازی اقدام کند. او تاکید کرده بود که دولت قصد «بگیر و ببند» ندارد
قانون حجاب و عفاف سال ١٣٨۴ در شورای عالی انقلاب فرهنگی تصویب شده است
