Human Right Activists News Agency (HRANA)- More than twelve Afghan immigrants arrested by security forces in wake of the June presidential election remain in prison. According to reports by Kaleme, for the past ten months, the Afghan immigrants were working on construction sites across the city of Tehran.
[Afghan immigrants] have been significantly harmed during the recent government crackdowns, but their [stories] remain unheard.
Many of the detained Afghans were simply observing the protests from sidewalks. They were not involved in the protests associated with the Iranian people’s opposition movement.
The group of Afghan immigrants have not received support by the Afghan government or the embassy of Afghanistan [in Iran]. They have been charged with “acting against Iran’s national security.” Some of them have received harsh sentences in the Revolutionary Court.
Majority of the [arrested Afghan immigrants] are illiterate. However, during various interrogations conducted by the Ministry of Intelligence, they were asked, “Which presidential candidate paid them to participate in the post-election unrest?”
During the interrogations, the detained Afghan immigrants repeatedly stated that they were only standing [outside] on the side [of the road] momentarily to stand and watch the people protest.
After ten months since their arrest, the Afghan immigrants remain imprisoned.
