Iran court issues death sentence over Ashura protests

Protestors around the Enqelab Square on Ashura Day (Tehran, 27 December 2009)An Iranian court has sentenced another person to death in connection with anti-government protests on the Shiite holy day of Ashura on 27 December, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported on Tuesday.
Citing the Tehran prosecutor’s office, ISNA said that eight others arrested during the demonstrations were sentenced to prison terms.
“The meetings to review the charges against the mentioned defendants were held last week in two public hearings at the [Tehran] Revolution Court, in the presence of the defense lawyers and a representative of the public prosecutor,” ISNA said.
The charges included moharebeh [waging war against God], assembling and colluding against security and propaganda against the system.
At least eight people were killed and hundreds arrested during clashes between security forces and demonstrators on 27 December. It was the most serious violence since the massive protests that followed June’s disputed presidential election.
Last month, Iran hanged two men sentenced to death on charges related to the post-election unrest. The West and human rights groups condemned the executions, accusing Iran of seeking to intimidate protesters.
The pro-reform movement has urged its supporters to take to the streets again on 11 February, when Iran marks the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution.
ISNA also said that an Iranian court has confirmed a five year jail sentence for Behzad Nabavi, a former industries minister.
Nabavi, 68, was among senior reformist figures arrested after the June election.
