CGIL CISL UIL, stop the executions in Iran
Immediate mobilization on 5 February in Rome in front of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran

04/02/2010
CGIL CISL UIL [Italy's 3 major trade union federations] condemn the decision of the Iranian government to enforce a further 9 death sentences against dissidents who took part in the protest demonstrations after the disputed presidential election of 12th June 2009. These additional death sentences follow the hanging of two young dissidents on 28th January last, executed as an unacceptable warning to all those who intend to take to the streets again for freedom and democracy on the 11th of February, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Iranian revolution.
CGIL CISL UIL condemn the continuous violations of political and social rights, the discrimination against women, religious and ethnic minorities, the repression of rights by violence and arbitrary acts. They ask President Ahmadinejad to cancel the death sentences and free the arrested dissidents, as a tension-decreasing and pacifying gesture.
CGIL CISL UIL ask the Italian government, the European Union and the United Nations Security Council to adopt adequate political, economic and commercial sanctions as soon as possible against the Iranian regime to stop this most recent of its many violations of the moratorium on the death penalty approved within the UN.
Respect for human, trade-union, political and religious rights, the release from prison and reinstatement in their employment of all opposition members and respect for international treaties in the matter of nuclear energy are the conditions for a true democracy and the establishment of the rule of law.
CGIL CISL UIL support the struggle of the thousands of workers who have been harshly repressed for having dared to set up independent workers’ unions in the transport, agriculture and education sectors. CGIL CISL UIL invite workers, peace and human rights activists to mobilize immediately on 5th February at 10.30 in front of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Rome, at Via Nomentana 363. During the demonstration signatures will be collected against the death penalty.
