Rashid Esmaili who is a member of the central council of Advar Tahkim Vahdat Organization, is detained in a cell he shares with 5 dangerous drug traffickers. Esmailii was arrested more than 40 days ago and is currently detained at Isfahan Prison.
According to the reports from Isfahan Prison, more than 40 days after his arrest, Esmaili is still under interrogation and subjected unbearable conditions. Esmaili continues to wear the same green wristband he had on at the time of arrest.
According to the International law, all detainees are innocent until proven guilty. Therefore they should be treated like all other prisoners and their pre-trial detentions shall not be used as means of punishment. Moreover, The IR prison Authority’s own regulation requires a separation of prisoners in accordance with their age, sex, level of education and the severity of their charges.
Holding Rashid Esmaili together with dangerous criminals is therefore an illegal act aiming to put pressure on him. Esmalili has been detained at Isfahan Central Prison since his arrest on December 23rd 2009.
A number of similar incidents have happened over the past few days including the transfer of the journalist, Masoud Bastani, to Karaj’s Rajaii-Shahr Prison where he shares his cell with 3 murder convicts.
