Russia’s state-run arms exporter, Rosoboronexport, said on Thursday that there were no international agreements barring it from selling weapons to Iran.Anatoly Isaikin, the head of Rosoboronexport, told reporters in Moscow that Russia still considers Iran a valuable customer for its weapons.
“Nothing prevents the continuation of military cooperation” between the two countries, he was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.
“Iran has never violated a single commitment it has undertaken with regard to military contracts,” he added.
Iran struck a deal with Russia in 2007 to obtain the sophisticated S-300 anti-aircraft system, but no deliveries have been made yet.
Russia is under intense Western pressure to distance itself from Iran in the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program, but has refused to block the delivery of the S-300 system.
Isaikin dodged a question on whether Russia could fulfill the contract and when.
“I just don’t quite understand why supplies of the S-300 system to Iran trouble you so much,” he told reporters, according to Reuters.
Both the United States and Israel have expressed concern over the possible delivery of the S-300 to Iran, which would significantly strengthen the country’s air defenses.
