World marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day

080127NS-BOXCAR-249_t607Wednesday marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Nazi death camp – a day which the United Nations designated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
More than one million people were murdered at Auschwitz, most of whom were Jews. The death camp, in modern-day Poland, was liberated by Soviet soldiers on 27 January 1945.
The theme for this year’s observance is “the Legacy of Survival”, which emphasizes the universal lessons that the survivors will pass on to succeeding generations, according to the UN.
“With fewer survivors alive to tell their stories, it is of primary importance to share this legacy with people everywhere to encourage respect for diversity and human rights for generations to come,” the UN said.
The UN resolution that created the International Holocaust Remembrance Day rejects denial of the Holocaust and condemns discrimination and violence based on religion or ethnicity.
Israeli President Shimon Peres delivered a historic speech to members of the German parliament in Berlin on Wednesday, and urged the world to bring the remaining perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice, according to AFP.
The White House said on Tuesday that it was sending a seven-member presidential delegation to Poland to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The delegation, lead by Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, will include three Auschwitz survivors.
Israel’s delegation will be led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
