I DO NOT agree with the author. First, the internet and social networking has greatly assisted in collaboration amongst members of the green movement. There are certain fan pages that are well recognized by the Iranian opposition group and are trusted sources.
Second, the internet has enabled the Iranian people to get their story out. It is confirmed that the Iranian State lies and their state media is their propaganda machine. For thirty years, they have been able to control and repress by hiding the truth from getting out. This ability has been significantly hampered. Although, as usual, foreign media is always late to catch on.
Third, a non-Iranian who is not very familiar with the dynamics of the conflict, may have difficulty distinguishing between tweets from the government, fake information, and reliable opposition sources. However, those Iranians engaged inside and outside the country know the regime better and can better distinguish between what’s from the government, what’s fake, and what’s real.
There are many activists emerging as sources of reliable information who communicate with many inside Iran. Unfortunately, again the foreign media is late to catch on.
Perhaps, the foreign medial should speak with those who run the news programs for Voice of America (Farsi) and BBC Persian.
