Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul, said on Thursday that a “military solution” was not the answer for Afghanistan.
The two leaders, who spoke by phone, stressed the need for greater humanitarian assistance for the war-torn country, according to a statement released by the office of the Iranian president.
“Instead of military weapons, the people of Afghanistan need humanitarian aid and help to build and promote the country’s prosperity,” Ahmadinejad said.
“Experience has shown that the use of a military solution for Afghanistan has no benefit,” the Iranian president added.
Ahmadinejad also stressed the need for the entire international community to assist in efforts to improve the situation in Afghanistan.
For his part, Gul said Turkey was “in complete agreement” with Iran that a military solution would not resolve the situation in Afghanistan.
The Turkish president also said that the expansion of Tehran-Ankara ties could be “very constructive” for regional countries.
