Iran on Thursday rejected reports that it was directly involved in the 2007 kidnapping of five Britons in Iraq.Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ramin Mehmanparast, dismissed the allegations as “baseless”, reports AFP.
The London-based Guardian newspaper reported today that computer expert, Peter Moore, and his four bodyguards were abducted in Baghdad in May 2007 in an operation led and masterminded by Iran’s Revolution Guards Corps.
Citing unnamed senior sources in Iran and Iraq, the Guardian’s investigative report said that the five men were taken within a day of their capture to prison camps in Iran.
The British Foreign Office said today that is has seen “no firm evidence” to back up claims that Iran was directly involved in the kidnapping.
“We are pretty clear there is no firm evidence that links Iran directly with the kidnappings,” a Foreign Office spokesperson told Reuters.
Moore was released on Wednesday. Three of the bodyguards were killed and the fourth is also believed to be dead.
The BBC reported today that when it asked US Central Command chief, General David Petraeus – the top US commander in the region – for his view this month, he said he was “90 percent certain” that the hostages were at some point held in Iran.
British officials have said they believe a Shiite militant group called Asaib al-Haq, or Leagues of Righteousness, may have been behind the kidnapping, reports Reuters.
