US President Barack Obama on Monday condemned the crackdown by Iranian security forces against protesters and called on Tehran to immediately free those “unjustly detained”.Speaking in Hawaii, where he is on vacation, Obama said that the United States stood with protesters in Iran, whose bid for justice had been met with the “iron fist of brutality” by the government, according to Reuters.
“The United States joins with the international community in strongly condemning the violent and unjust suppression of innocent Iranian citizens,” the president was quoted as saying by AFP.
He voiced confidence “that history will be on the side of those who seek justice.”
Obama said that the events taking place in Iran were not about the United States or any other country. “It is about the Iranian people and their aspirations for justice,” he said.
The American president also called for the “immediate release of all who have been unjustly detained in Iran.”
“The decision of Iran’s leaders to govern through fear and tyranny will not continue,” Obama said, adding: “It’s telling when governments fear the aspirations of their own people more than the power of any other nation.”
At least eight people were killed on Sunday in clashes between security forces and protesters. More than 300 people were arrested in Tehran, the police said.
Sunday’s clashes were the most violent since the protests that followed June’s disputed presidential election.
Earlier today, at least seven pro-reform figures and activists were arrested, including two aides to former President Mohammad Khatami and three aides to Mir Hossein Mousavi, one of the pro-reform leaders.
