The United States said on Wednesday that it was ready to arrange for a representative of the government of Iran to visit an Iranian man jailed in the U.S. for trafficking arms to Iran.The State Department said that the Iranian government had asked for consular access to Amir Hossein Ardebili, who was sentenced last week to five years in prison.
“The Department of State remains available to assist with arranging a prospective visit,” the department said in a statement in response to a journalist’s question.
Ardebili was arrested in the Democratic Republic of Georgia in October 2007 and extradited to the United States in January 2008. In May 2008, he pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including violating the US arms embargo.
Prosecutors said Ardebili had acquired thousands of items for Iran, including military aircraft parts.
His arrest, extradition and confession were kept secret until early this month. US officials said the case remained sealed so that US agents could quietly pursue leads obtained from Ardebili’s laptop computer.
Iran has condemned the sentence as “illegal”.
