WashingtonTV:Iran on Tuesday criticized recent remarks by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regarding Tehran’s ties with Latin American countries.
On Friday, Clinton warned Latin American countries that boosting ties with the Islamic Republic was a “really bad idea” that could have consequences for them, citing Venezuela and Bolivia in particular.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ramin Mehmanparast, said the comments infringed on accepted diplomatic norms.
“It is clear that these comments are in contravention of diplomatic norms and the best proof of that is the reaction by the regional countries, who describe remarks by American officials as interference in their internal affairs,” he told reporters, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Speaking at a summit of leftist Latin American states in Cuba on Sunday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez condemned Clinton’s remarks as an “overt threat” and vowed that relations with Iran would get stronger, reports AFP.
The Brazilian and Bolivian governments also rejected Clinton’s comments.
Highlighting Iran’s push for closer ties with Latin American states, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil last month.
