Iranian security forces have surrounded Tehran University to prevent National Students Day demonstrations.

Reportedly security forces have taken position in all the routes that lead to Tehran University to impede protesters from exiting the campus.

They have positioned several buses and scaffolding against the main entrance of the University to restrict people’s view of student protests. Students entering and exiting the campus are heavily controlled.

Eyewitness accounts tell of increased presence of security forces in the streets leading to the University and a heavy concentration of the forces since this morning around the Tehran University.

Amir Kabir, Sharif and Shahid Beheshti Universities are also guarded by a heavy presence of police, according to firsthand reports.

Cell phone access is blocked in the area and payphones have been sealed according to eyewitness reports.

Police and the Revolutionary Guards had warned earlier that any “illegal” gathering would be confronted.

Accoroding to Reuters and Associated Press hostilities have broken between police and protesters in some of Tehran’s major squares.

Aerial shots to disperse the crowd have been reported in different parts of the city. BBC news has cited eyewitness reports of police using tear gas and batons to disperse protesters.

Students shouting “Death to the dictator!” and “Death to the deceiving government!” can be heard from the streets around Sharif University. Green Balloons have reportedly been seen rising to air around Sharif University.

Yesterday Iran’s chief student organization Advare-e Tahkim-e Vahdat announced that “the establishment’s attempts at returning people to the homes and creating public trust have fallen to the path of futility.” They declared that the violent confrontations with students will lead to “greater momentum” in the student movement.
